Delivering Environmental Services Across Live Forecourt Environments
Many of the sites involved in the contract remained operational during servicing works, with constant movement from customers, vehicles and fuel deliveries throughout the day. Delivering environmental maintenance safely within these live environments required a practical and carefully coordinated approach between operational teams and site management.

BioMarsh implemented site-specific maintenance programs designed around the operational requirements of each forecourt location. Activities including drainage maintenance, interceptor servicing and pump station cleaning were scheduled carefully to reduce operational disruption while maintaining safe working conditions.
Routine forecourt cleaning services also helped reduce contamination risks associated with fuel residue, debris accumulation and blocked drainage systems, supporting safer conditions for customers, staff and operational traffic.
Maintaining operational continuity remained a key priority throughout the contract, with the majority of sites remaining fully operational during servicing activities.
Commitment to Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance
Because petroleum forecourts present significant environmental and operational risks, maintaining full compliance with BP’s Health and Safety procedures formed a critical part of the contract from the outset.
Before any works commenced, BioMarsh participated in detailed planning meetings, operational assessments and site inspections with BP management teams to establish safe working procedures, emergency response protocols and reporting structures for both planned and reactive activities. All operatives assigned to the contract completed BP’s contractor approval and site induction processes before attending operational locations.
Specialist Training and Site Safety Procedures
Working around active fuel forecourts comes with obvious risks. Fuel residue, underground drainage systems, moving vehicles, vapours and the possibility of contamination incidents all needed to be considered before any work began.
Because of this, BioMarsh made sure every operative working on the contract had the correct training for petroleum forecourt environments and drainage maintenance activities. Teams were supplied with the required PPE and received training covering spill response, confined space working, drainage servicing and environmental emergency procedures.
RAMS documentation was prepared for both scheduled maintenance works and reactive callouts. Regular toolbox talks, safety checks and equipment inspections also formed part of the day-to-day operational process across all working locations.
Planned Preventative Drainage Maintenance Program
Drainage PPM services represented a significant element of the contract due to the operational demands placed on BP’s forecourt drainage systems. Maintaining these systems proactively helped reduce the risk of blockages, environmental incidents and unplanned operational disruption.
BioMarsh delivered a structured preventative maintenance program covering drainage jetting, interceptor and separator maintenance, pump station cleaning and sewage treatment desludging activities across BP’s UK-wide estate.
Interceptor and Separator Maintenance
Interceptor systems play a critical role within petroleum forecourts by preventing hydrocarbons and contaminants from entering surface water drainage systems. Proper maintenance of these systems formed a key part of maintaining environmental performance and operational safety standards throughout BP’s forecourt estate.
BioMarsh introduced a condition-based servicing approach that allowed maintenance activities to be scheduled according to system condition and operational requirements rather than relying exclusively on fixed intervals. Specialist monitoring equipment was used to assess oil and silt levels within interceptors and separators, allowing maintenance schedules to be tailored based on actual operational requirements.
This approach reduced unnecessary servicing while ensuring all sites continued meeting environmental compliance standards.
Drainage Jetting and Blockage Clearance
Drainage jetting formed another important part of the preventative maintenance program. Underground drainage systems were maintained using high-pressure jetting equipment designed to remove silt accumulation, sludge, hydrocarbons and general debris before major blockages developed.
Routine blockage clearance and preventative jetting activities helped maintain drainage flow throughout operational forecourt areas while reducing the risk of flooding incidents and drainage-related disruption.
Taking a proactive approach to drainage maintenance also helped reduce the volume of reactive emergency callouts required across BP’s network during the contract period.
CCTV Drainage Inspections and Infrastructure Repairs
To support the long-term maintenance strategy, BioMarsh carried out CCTV drainage inspections across a number of BP forecourt and distribution locations to assess the condition and performance of underground drainage systems.
These inspections helped identify developing drainage issues including damaged pipework, displaced joints, root intrusion, structural defects and restricted drainage flow before they developed into larger operational problems.
Drain Aligning and Repair Works
Where drainage defects were identified, BioMarsh carried out drain aligning and repair works to restore system performance and minimise the risk of future failures.
BioMarsh carefully coordinated repair works to minimise excavation requirements and limit disruption across operational forecourt environments. Maintaining accessibility for customers, staff and delivery vehicles remained an important part of the overall repair strategy.
Identifying drainage defects early through CCTV inspections also helped reduce the likelihood of major environmental incidents and allowed many issues to be resolved before emergency reactive repairs were required.
Pump Station Cleaning and Sewage Treatment Desludging
Pump station cleaning and sewage treatment desludging services formed an important part of the wider maintenance program across several BP operational locations.
Routine servicing helped maintain the performance of these systems while reducing the risk of failures linked to sludge accumulation, restricted flow, or equipment-related issues.
Specialist vacuum tankers, liquid waste removal vehicles and drainage equipment were used to complete these servicing activities safely and efficiently across operational sites. All waste collected during the works was removed and disposed of in accordance with environmental legislation.
Taking a preventative approach to servicing helped reduce the risk of operational failures and supported more reliable system performance throughout the contract.

Emergency Fuel Spill Response and Reactive Services
Alongside the planned maintenance program, BioMarsh also provided emergency fuel spill response services across BP’s operational estate to support environmental protection and operational safety requirements.
Fuel spills and drainage contamination incidents required immediate response to prevent pollutants entering underground drainage systems, surrounding ground conditions, or nearby surface water environments.
Specialist response teams attended incidents quickly to contain affected areas, isolate drainage systems and safely remove contaminated materials while helping maintain safe operational conditions across active forecourts.
Rapid Response and Pollution Prevention
Emergency fuel spill response operations often involved the use of specialist absorbents, drainage protection systems, containment barriers and hazardous waste removal procedures.
BioMarsh operatives were trained to assess environmental risks quickly and restore sites to safe operational condition with minimal disruption to customers or forecourt operations.
The company’s rapid response capability helped BP minimise environmental risks while maintaining operational continuity across active retail fuel sites.
